Egg Facts
Eggs are one of the healthiest and most complete foods available - they play an important part in the diet of any healthy family.
The 6 grams of protein in an egg is of such high quality that it is used as the standard by which other foods are measured.
Eggs also contain important vitamins, including A, E and K and a range of B vitamins as well as riboflavin and folic acid. Folic acid is of particular importance to women in the early stages of pregnancy.
On top of this, eggs contain all eight essential amino acids and other valuable minerals including iron.
Egg yolk contains about 5 grams of fat but only a small proportion of this is saturated fat - about 1.6 grams. Children especially need fat in foods at a time when they have high-energy requirements for growth but little appetite.
Eggs contain cholesterol but it is generally accepted that dietary cholesterol does not raise blood cholesterol levels
